On 24 September the 11th “Spanish Cinema Line” festival began at the Zhovten cinema in Kyiv; it will run until 30 September and present five notable Spanish films of recent years.

The festival is held with the support of the Embassy of Spain in Ukraine and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) in cooperation with the film company Arthouse Traffic. Information about the participation of the Embassy of Spain and AECID is also shown on the festival's official poster.

The organisers note that the project aims to introduce Ukrainian audiences to contemporary Spanish cinema.

The festival opened on 24 September with the new film by two-time Oscar winner Pedro Almodóvar, “Bitter Christmas” (Amarga Navidad). The film combines drama and comedy and tells of an artist in a creative crisis who uses events from his own life and the stories of those close to him in his script. The film was shown in Cannes, where it won an award for best soundtrack, and was also part of the programme of the Karlovy Vary film festival.

The programme of the “Spanish Cinema Line” also includes the crime comedy “Who Fooled Whom” by Arantxa Echevarría, the drama “The Black Ball” by the directing duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, Irene Iborra's animated film “Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake” and Oliver Laxe's drama “Sirāt”.

“Who Fooled Whom”, scheduled for 25 and 29 September, tells of a former talent-show contestant who, because of financial problems, agrees to take part in the theft of a valuable painting. The film was part of the official programme of the Málaga film festival.

On 26 September a special screening of “The Black Ball” will be held at Zhovten — a story linked to the figure of Federico García Lorca and the writer's unfinished manuscript. The film was directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi.

Two screenings are planned for 27 September. The family animation “Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake” tells of a 12-year-old girl who, with her younger brother and mother, is forced to leave her home. To help her brother cope with fear and instability, Olivia turns their new reality into an imaginary “film shoot”. The film will be shown with Ukrainian dubbing.

The same day audiences will be shown “Sirāt” by Oliver Laxe — one of the most notable Spanish festival films of recent times, made with the participation of producers Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar.

According to the current schedule, repeat screenings of “Bitter Christmas” will take place on 28 and 30 September, and of “Who Fooled Whom” on 29 September. All the main feature films are shown in the original language with Ukrainian subtitles.

After Kyiv the festival will continue in Lviv: from 12 to 16 October screenings will take place at the Planeta Kino cinema in the Forum Lviv shopping centre.

The “Spanish Cinema Line” is being held in Ukraine for the eleventh time and is one of the cultural projects aimed at presenting contemporary Spanish culture to Ukrainian audiences.
